The Defendants were shipwrecked with another man together with V, a 17 year old cabin boy in a small boat about 1600 miles from land. They drifted for 20 days and the Defendants decided to kill the cabin boy and they ate him. They were picked up by a passing ship 4 days later and when they returned to England they were convicted of murder. They claimed that it was necessary to do this to save themselves from dying but this was rejected.
